Staircase Renovations

Staircase Renovation vs Staircase Replacement

If the main staircase structure is sound, renovation can often improve the look, feel, and safety without the disruption of a full replacement.

When renovation makes sense

Renovation is usually the better route when the staircase is structurally sound but looks tired, noisy, or dated.

  • Replace spindles, handrails, or newel details.
  • Add oak cladding or update visible treads and risers.
  • Repair squeaks or loose sections where access allows.

When replacement may be needed

Replacement is more likely when the layout is changing, the structure is unsuitable, or the existing staircase cannot safely support the desired finish.

How to decide

A proper inspection is the starting point. The quote should separate structural needs from cosmetic finish choices.
